A Word to the Wise
“If we can’t do something soon, I fear for the future of Genesius (and other local theatre companies) in Berks County.”
It might seem a bit odd to start out the Participate at RCP page with a quote about Genesius. However, it will not seem as odd when you are finished reading this letter. While on the topic, it should be noted the similarity of this letter to the letter quoted above is not circumstantial, instead, it is rooted in the fact that ALL COMMUNITY THEATRES in Reading are suffering from this problem. However, before I go any further, I have not yet properly introduced myself. My name is Joseph Majesky, and I am your new Technical Director at Reading Community Players. Many of you probably know me, but for those who don’t, here is some background:
I have been working in theatre for about 4 years now, however, they have been a very busy 4 years. During that time, I have been involved in over 50 productions, joined the professional workforce of the entertainment industry, and worked for independent entertainment companies. Most of my work has been at Genesius Theatre, however, a substantial portion has been at RCP, Fleetwood, and PSI,where I work professionally for corporate venues.
Anyway, I digress from the intentions of this letter. I accepted the Technical Director position in fall of 2011 after being offered it twice before throughout the last year. I must say, going into RCP at fall 2011 was something of a shock. The theatre is, perhaps, in the worst shape I have seen in a while. A devoted (and perhaps a tad crazy) Technical Director, I quickly enacted an overhaul and renovation of the technical systems that RCP operates on. The renovations were a success, but they brought me to the realization of a much larger problem. Throughout the entire publicized process, I had a total of 5 people help me out, all of which were my close friends. Everyone knew about the process, which was what concerned me. Hence, as the title of this page suggests, I am writing to you about our membership.
Community organizations are run by memberships. RCP is no different. We are in DESPERATE need of your help. This includes trying out for shows and being heavily involved in the season. But more importantly, this means getting INVOLVED. I am talking costumes, lights/sounds, cleaning, renovating, innovating, fundraising, and otherwise just volunteering time. 90% of what happens in the theatre is unrelated to any particular show. Any and All involvement is greatly appreciated! There are many opportunities to do this, first and foremost is by joining our facebook page where you can find out dates and times for specific projects, but secondly by contacting the heads of the departments that you wish to be involved in (See Below) This is NOT an impossible task, and Reading Community Players can be a strong presence in our community at our CURRENT LOCATION. However, we do not have much time. If RCP doesn’t turn around in the next year or so, I doubt we will ever be able to again. We are at the point of making a decision of how we want our theatre to go. Lets not waste it!
